Level Indicators

Level indicators show the liquid level in a tank or reservoir directly on the tank wall, without power supply or electronics. They are common on hydraulic tanks, gearboxes and lubrication reservoirs, where the oil level must be checked during routine inspection without opening the tank.

The main choice is between one point and a range. A sight glass is a window screwed into a single port, which shows whether the oil is at that height, typically the minimum or normal level. A column indicator is fixed with two connections and shows the level over the full height between them, so you see how far the level is from the minimum or maximum. Column indicators are also available with an integrated thermometer.

Check the connection first: the thread size for a sight glass, or the distance between the two holes for a column indicator. Then check the pressure and temperature rating and compatibility with the medium. Sight glasses with a glass window tolerate higher temperatures, while column indicators are made for unpressurised tanks. For remote monitoring or an alarm at a set level, use a level switch or level sensor instead.
