Vertical Float Switches

Vertical float switches are mounted in the top of a tank and switch when the liquid reaches a fixed height. The float moves along a guide tube or rod, so the switch point stays exact and repeatable. They are common on hydraulic tanks, lubrication units and coolant tanks.

As the level rises or falls, the float moves along the tube or rod and operates a contact in the switch head. Depending on the design, the switch point is set by the tube length, by contacts that slide along the tube, or by cutting the rod to length on site. Versions with two switch points can give a warning and a shut-down signal from one switch, and some also include a temperature switch for the oil.

Choosing a vertical float switch

Mounting: a threaded port in the top of the tank, or the standard breather filter flange of a hydraulic tank to DIN 24557-2.

Switch point: measured from the mounting face. The contacts are for control signals, so switch a pump or heater through a relay.

Medium and materials: check the float, tube and seal materials, and the pressure and temperature rating, against the oil, coolant or water in the tank.

Electrical connection: a plug connector, such as M12 or a DIN connector, makes wiring and replacement easy.

A vertical float switch needs a fixed mounting point and a calm liquid surface, because fast-flowing liquid can move the float. For open pits, wells and wastewater, use a cable float switch instead.
